As a matter of fact, this is also asked by the kids themselves as they grow up as teenagers. Indeed, this is just a natural query. Isn’t it fun to know, or even predict, how tall a child would be? There are so many ways to answer this.

Initially, it will be suggested for a pediatrician to be consulted. This is one of the wisest and most obvious steps to take. In a lot of occurrences, the pediatrician recommend parents to keep an eye on their kid’s development. It should be made a point that they are really growing as it is expected of them. Any problem in the process may have an implication to the child’s height. This is one of the reasons why health is still the primary concern.

Like any other processes, there are also methods involved in the prediction of your child’s height. The most accurate one is the use of bone age. This can be determined with the presence of X-ray. However, do not get this wrong for there are other methods which may help in the said prediction. As a matter of fact, these other methods can just be done at home.

The easiest though is the estimation through the height of the parents. This does not follow all the time though. It may vary from case to case basis. So what are the ways to predict ‘how tall will my son be?’

## Methods to use

1. ### Two Years times Two

From the name itself, the height of the child would only needs to be multiplied by two. However, this can only be done as the kid reaches two years old. Per nature,  girls are expected to develop quickly. With this, multiplying the height may really be effective. This kind of method has been around for quite a long time now. Even if, there are still no researches existing for accuracy to be demonstrated.

1. ### Mid-Parental

Mid-parental is considered to be a complex methodology. This is undertaken by measuring both the height of the father and mother. These should be derived in inches and then, divided by 2. It may differ depending on the gender of the kid. For boys, 2 ½ inches have to be added. As for girls, there will be a subtraction of 2 ½ inches.

1. ### Grow Charts

A growth chart is available for plotting the head size, weight and height of the child. This is commonly seen by many. Pediatricians always have a standardized growth chart. This is looked at for everytime the child goes to the clinic for a check-up or visit. Not all people realize that the said chart is very much helpful in assessing the growth of their child in accordance to the standards set. This may also give parents the insight to the puberty onset of their kid.

1. ### Genetics and Family History

There are growth and height patterns which may run through families. Basically, the genetic make-up of the parents plays a vital role in how a child grows. There are also other times when the way other family member grows is being verified. This is farther made clear by tracing how the parents themselves grew from childhood. These will serve as clues in knowing how tall the child will then be.

The aforementioned methods are intentionally carried out in order to predict the height of a child. Despite of these established schemes, there are other factors that may have a repercussion in the development of the kid. What are these?

• #### Nutrition

–Normally, when the child is overweight, he is way taller than his classmates. Do not get this wrong because it does not mean that this will still be the same case as he becomes an adult. This is why the kid’s nutrition may have an impact on the way he grows.

• #### Hormones

– Hormonal imbalances like growth hormone levels, low thyroid may all lead to slower growth. There are even times when they become the aftermath of a shorter kid. With this, the condition has to be diagnosed and treated accordingly. They even have to be trace beforehand. If not, the effects may be permanent. Reviewing red flags would also assist. Growth hormone problems are no joke.

• ### Medications

– There are medications which may slow growth. Among these are corticosteroids.

• ### Health conditions

– Kids with chronic illnesses may be left behind when it comes to height. These said health conditions are arthritis, cancer, or even untreated celiac disease.

• ### Genetic conditions

–Whenever children come with any genetic condition, they are tend to be way shorter. However, this may go the other way round. It occurs sometimes. For instance, look at those with Down Syndrome, Turner Syndrome, or Noonan Syndrome. These children may be shorter as compared to their other family members. As for Marfan Syndrome, the effect may be the opposite because the kid is expected to be taller.

Any concern about the child’s height should be monitored. Parents should be the first one to know if their kid is growing too slow or fast. Whatever the circumstance may be, contacting a pediatrician should be the priority. These pediatricians will be in-charged in ordering if further tests have to be observed.

Usually, it will only take a simple x-ray. This will be done in the wrist and hand. This is going to show the remaining growth of the kid. Lab tests on the other hand help in finding out the growth problems of the kid, if there are any. This will also give idea on how the problem will be treated. There are times when the patients are referred to a pediatric specialist, pediatric geneticist or even pediatric endocrinologist. This is a way to go for a more detailed treatment and evaluation.

Just remember that the growth of a child stops after puberty. Do not delaying on knowing how tall will my son be.
